Italy is a beautiful country and one of its many awe-inspiring cities is Rome. Rome is the city of ancient ruins and rich history. As we all travel around and discover various places, one finds it hard to believe that one city can hold all of the antiquity within. The Colosseum

 

The construction of this building started in 72 AD and finished in 80 AD and now it stands as the most famous building of Roman Empire. It has the capacity to accommodate over 55,000 spectators and have eighty entrances. This building was used for fights between gladiators and between wild animals and gladiators who fought till they die. For those of you who don’t know Gladiators were mostly condemned criminals or war prisoners. The gladiators used to fight for their life in order to please the expecting crowds and kings. This building is considered to be an icon of Rome. A part of this building was damaged during 847 due to an earthquake. On your visit there, you can behold the evidence of damage as well.

 

The Pantheon

 

This is also one of the world’s famous and ancient buildings of Rome built in 118 AD. It has a large bronze door at the entrance, three columns over the portico and a high dome. The original purpose of making this building was to make a temple for pagan Gods. But it was later converted into a Roman Catholic Church in 609. Raphael, the artist is entombed in The Pantheon. This beautiful temple is as old as time but still it is highly well preserved even after all these years. You may even have a glimpse of this beautiful building from the window of Rome Ciampino Airport, but it is suggested that you should experience it up close.

 

St. Peter’s Basilica

 

This is one of the biggest churches of the world and it is located inside the Vatican. It was built around 349 AD originally and fell into ruins during the mid period of 15th century. In 16th century it was renovated and turned into a larger church. St. Peter died in this church as a martyr and he entombed underground the church. This building is known to be the holiest one in Catholic world. It was designed by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo and a few others. This is truly the most amazing and breathtaking Renaissance architecture in the entire world.

 

The Trevi Fountain

 

When in Rome, it will be sinful to not visit the Trevi Fountain. It has a beautiful and unique design and remains the most popular tourist attraction for so many years. It was built around 1700s. The fountain portrays Neptune the God of the Sea as the main figure, riding a carriage in shape of a sea shell and pulling two sea horses. There is an amazing legend about this fountain as well. It says if you flip a coin into the fountain over your shoulder with your back towards it, you will return to Rome. But during touring months the fountain is so crowded that you can even get close enough to take a picture of this breathtaking view. But not to worry since one still hopes to return to Rome.

 

The Pallatine Hill

 

According to a myth, this piece of land was found in 800 BC as original city of Rome by Romulus who slayed Remus, his twin brother. Cicero, Augustus and Marc Antony are known to have had homes on this hill. Discoveries of the fractional ruins date back to the first century. Antiguarium Museum lies on top of this hill.

Via Appia Antica

 

This is a special road which is the oldest one to be paved anywhere in the entire world. You will see little crowd from tourist in this particular area but still you might not get it all to yourself. This is because only a few people know about it and those who know never miss it. It is now converted into a park named the Parco Regionale Dell’ Appia Antica. And you can also visit San Callisto catacombs and many other tombs while being there on the line of the road.

 

The Aventine Hill

 

If you want to enjoy a breathtaking view of the entire city then this hill is where you should be. You can look through the keyholes to view St. Peter’s Basilica below and visit the Priory of the Knights of Malta during your journey. Many tourists are unable to reach over the top, so it is a good place to get away from the crowds.

 

San Paolo Fuori le Mura

 

Like I said, Rome is a heavily toured city and this is why most of the places are packed with tourists visiting from around the world. So one might get tired of getting past through crowds and need to have a moment of piece. If you are in need of that moment then San Paolo Fuori le Mura is the place you should be. It is another basilica like St. Peter’s but comparatively less visited. It is very impressive, very huge and in fact one of the largest church in the country.

The conventional Roman nightlife is mostly about a long dinner with a huge group of friends that can be stretched late after midnight. But you can get together before dinner for an aperitif. Visiting nice restaurants also gives you the chance to meet women in Rome. Most of them are out for fine dining and you can always approach a woman that you like.

 

Rome is also about local flavors and whiles your visit it is hard to miss the local food and drinks.
